As the threat of coronavirus spread throughout the United States, hand sanitizer was one of the many products that quickly sold out in stores. Many Americans have turned to making their own hand sanitizer for the time being, but some may be more effective than others. After several conflicting tweets from users claiming to make hand sanitizer with Tito’s vodka, the company released a statement stating that while their vodka contains 40% alcohol, it is recommended by the CDC to use at least 60% alcohol when making hand sanitizer.
Yahoo! Finance spoke to Dr. Kim about the comments made by Tito’s and she offered a solution to anyone looking to make hand sanitizer at home. Dr. Kim recommends using any of these options:
While Dr. Kim stated that ethyl alcohol is the most effective for killing germs, witch hazel or a stronger vodka can be used as an alternative.
